The Romans sometimes compelled a murderer to be bound face-to-face with their victim and to carry the decaying body until the odorous fumes given off by it devoured their life. Under penalty of death, no one was allowed to free the condemned person of the corpse.
Was Paul referencing this gruesome practice of a “body of death’’ accompanying him wherever he went as kind of a ‘Show and Tell?’
“Wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from this body of death?
Thanks be to Elohim, through Yeshua Messiah our Master!
So then, with the mind I myself truly serve the Torah of Elohim, but with the flesh the torah of sin.
There is, then, now no condemnation to those who are in Messiah Yeshua, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
For the torah of the Spirit of the life in Messiah Yeshua has set me free from the torah of sin and death.” (Romans 7:24-25; 8:1-2 ISR)
As the lawbreaker was set free from carrying the heavy burden of his sin by the death of the one who removed the corpse from his back, so also are we to see our deliverance from the penalty of sin because Yeshua has died in our place.
“…You’ve freed me from my chains.” (Psalm 116:16 CEB)
